We should not ignore our mental fitness if we enjoy life to the fullest while living up to our potential.
Here are a few tips that can help you be stronger emotionally and in turn help you live a more fulfilling life:
1. Find a Solution Rather Than Someone to Blame
It is easy to find someone to blame when something doesn’t turn out the way it’s supposed to be. But that’s isn’t a good way to react. Instead, when things go wrong, focus on fixing it and ensure it doesn’t happen again.
Also, sometimes hitting rock bottom or having missed an excellent opportunity can be the best thing to happen to us.
“When you are at the bottom, you find beauty in such little things, and goodness in such little gestures. When I compare any struggle today to ones that I may have had in my childhood, there is nothing that can bring me down.” – Natalia Vodianova
Always remember: Failure is a lesson teaching you how to succeed. Find out what positive lessons you can learn from a terrible situation.
2. Make an Effort to Communicate
“Between what is said and not meant, and what is meant and not said, most of the love is lost.” – Khalil Gibran
Most of the misunderstandings occur due to no communication or miscommunication. This always causes unnecessary stress, heartache, and discomfort.
Most of these misunderstandings can be avoided or fixed if we don’t get offended and don’t let our ego get in the way. When we try to show others kindness, most of the time they also respond nicely, and whatever had a caused rift disappears in no time.
3. Distance Yourself from Negative People
There have been studies on the impact of ’emotional contagion,’ which basically means that we mimic the feelings of those who are around us. There is even a 20 year Harvard study on how the happiness of those who are in your social network impact the level of happiness you have. You can know more about both these studies in this article:
4. Balance is the Key
“Those who feel satisfied with their personal lives are more satisfied with their careers and perform better.”
? Michael Hyatt
Too many of us are consumed by our careers, our businesses, and our professional lives at the expense of everything else. In the quest to attain the next best thing, we work long hours sacrificing our health, sleep, and relationships.
The next time you feel inclined to do longer hours, remind yourself of this HBR article on how excessive work is not beneficial for both employees and the companies.
5. Mindfulness: Live in the Moment
Exercise mindfulness no matter what you are doing. That’s perhaps the most ideal form of meditation rather than sitting in a chair silently for 10 minutes each day.
“If while washing dishes, we think only of the cup of tea that awaits us, thus hurrying to get the dishes out of the way as if they were a nuisance, then we are not “washing the dishes to wash the dishes.” What’s more, we are not alive during the time we are washing the dishes. In fact, we are completely incapable of realizing the miracle of life while standing at the sink. If we can’t wash the dishes, the chances are we won’t be able to drink our tea either. While drinking the cup of tea, we will only be thinking of other things, barely aware of the cup in our hands. Thus we are sucked away into the future -and we are incapable of actually living one minute of life.”
? Thich Nhat Hanh, The Miracle of Mindfulness
If the above quote from one of the most respected mindfulness expert doesn’t convince you, perhaps find out some science-backed benefits of mindfulness and meditation will do the trick.
However, we do know that it isn’t easy to start being mindful right away in a 21st-century world which is full of distractions. Hence consider practicing mindfulness meditation through a mobile app even if it’s for just a few minutes each day. My favorite app is Insight Timer which has thousands of free meditations. Many love the Headspace app as well.
